Grounded funchuks work a bit different from anything else. It's not like other boomerang/whip weapons. After sending it out, it will curve away from the direction you're aiming. For example, punching to the right and then keeping the JoyCon tilted to the right will make go mostly straight ahead, with a slightly awkward curve. However, if you punch to the right and immediately tilt the JoyCon to the left, it will extend in a wide arc to the right before going left.
