"Fresh from Spring Gym, we have Spring Man bouncing into the fray! Why do they call him 'the bouncer'? If you're asking, you're not paying attention! He's long dreamed of hanging that championship belt on his mantle, but will he crack under pressure?"
—Biff

Spring Man is a playable fighter in ARMS. In the game, he is a young, enthusiastic fighter, and the newest contestant to join the Grand Prix. Along with Ribbon Girl, Spring Man was one of the first two fighters to be revealed for ARMS and he is often considered to be the mascot of the game.

Appearance

Spring Man appears mostly human except for his spiraled irises and his metallic, spring-like ARMS. He has blue eyes, and shiny, light blue hair which is curled to resemble a spring. He wears a white athletic shirt, a pinkish red mask, blue-gray shorts, and red sneakers. He also wears a chest plate, which is the same color as his mask, that features his logo.

Backstory

"With arms made of springs, no wonder they call him "the bouncer"! At first glance it's hard to take this guy seriously, but in the ARMS game, he always takes center stage. He can perma-charge in a pinch, and that indomitable spirit is gonna take him right to the top!"
Official description

Spring Man is a young ARMS athlete who trains at Spring Gym. For many years, Spring Man has dreamed of defeating Max Brass and becoming champion of the ARMS Grand Prix. His favorite food is pizza, and he is often seen eating it in official art. Spring Man has a confident and enthusiastic personality. He takes a particular pride in his spring-like, pompadour hairstyle.

According to the ARMS Direct, an interview with Spring Man revealed that while he was initially surprised at his gift of ARMS, he later came to the realization that they were "actually pretty rad."

While discussing unrevealed stories in the ARMS Universe, director Kosuke Yabuki revealed in an interview that Spring Man is the third fighter to hold his name.[1]

Abilities

One of Spring Man's abilities allows him to parry incoming attacks, giving him added time to counter and punish. It is performed by holding the dash or jump button and releasing at any time before max charge. If holding jump, the player has to wait until Spring Man touches the floor to be able to activate the ability. The parry is mainly used to bait and counter punches, cover wake-up options and defend against aggressive opponents. When Spring Man reaches 25% (250 HP) or lower health, he will glow red and his ARMS stay permanently charged.

Playstyle

Spring Man is a great all-rounder, suitable for players of all skill levels. His middling stats make him good at almost everything, but not great at any one thing in particular. His deflect provides great defense from incoming punches, but because of the few active frames of the deflect ring and the nature of the deflect's activation, it's sometimes difficult to line up deflects properly with attacks about to hit him. It's also possible to focus too much on deflecting incoming ARMS and it's also fairly easy to fall into a rhythm with deflects, making it easier for his opponent to anticipate his actions.

When using Spring Man, one should focus on keeping a solid balance of offense and defense, using his deflects appropriately to dodge and evade while blocking attacks allowing you to counterattack, or to close the gap. Don't forget to make use of his shield, as it is the alternative for when a deflect can't be achieved, or if Spring Man tries to deflect an ARM that would hit him more than once (e.g. Explosive-Type ARMS).

When in his low-health mode, pressure your opponents with a constant barrage of charged punches, while staying evasive and hard to hit. This can quickly overwhelm and frustrate opponents.

ARM Recommendations

With Spring Man, you have to constantly change your playstyle on the fly to fit the situation, so you should be willing to switch up your ARMS frequently as well. Most ARMS work really well with him so don't be afraid to experiment and find the best set that works for you. Here are some good choices:

In Competitive Play

Spring Man is often considered to be a mid-tier character as he has been shown to be well-rounded with no extreme advantages or disadvantages. He can contend with many higher tier characters in the right hands.

Trivia

  • Spring Man was one of the first characters announced as playable, being revealed alongside the game itself during the Nintendo Switch Presentation on 2017-01-13.[2]
  • In his original reveal, Spring Man was known as "The Versatile Fighter" instead of "The Bouncer".
  • Springtron was modeled after him. However his relationship with him is unknown.
  • It is implied in one of Springtron's pre-battle quotes against him that Spring Man doesn't like math.
  • Spring Man and Springtron are the only characters to share a voice actor being with each other.
  • When Spring Man gets new ARMS, the same ARMS become available for Springtron and vice versa.
  • Spring Man shares his name with one of the antagonists from Kinnikuman - the relation between the two characters is acknowledged by Masahiro Sakurai in Min Min's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Mr. Sakurai Presents presentation.
    • Spring Man's name is also used by one of the four bosses from Mega Man 7. Similarly, the relation between the two has been acknowledged by Capcom twice on Twitter.[3][4]
    • Coincidently, Springman from Kinnikuman had been defeated by Ramenman, a Chinese-themed fighter comparable to Min Min.
  • Spring Man is one of the few characters who's beta voice can be found in the game's files.
  • When Min Min first released in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the electronic billboard in the background of Spring Stadium displayed Springtron's logo on Spring Man's banner.
